Abstract

Objective: Tuberculosis of the spine is a chronic progressive disease.

Methods: We designed a retrospective study of 26 patients with spinal tuberculosis who were diagnosed in hospital. There are 13 male and 13 female patients with an average age of 66.5 years. The average time of symptoms before diagnosis was 10.5 months, and lower back pain was the most common symptom. Twenty four patients were infected with more than two Kyrgyz bones, with an average of 2.3 thoracic and lumbar vertebrae accounting for 94.9%. In 21 patients, tubercle bacilli were cultured from spinal cord, paraspinal abscess or psoas abscess, 8 of them were positive for acid fast smear. The chest X-ray of 14 patients showed signs of tuberculosis. 19 patients received sputum culture of tubercle bacillus, 10 of them developed tubercle bacillus, and 4 of them examined the acid resistant staining smear at the same time.

Result:  23 patients were able to follow up the prognosis, 18 patients were treated successfully, 5 patients relapsed. The recurrent group was younger and had longer symptoms.

Conclusion: Patients with chronic renal failure have a high recurrence rate. Tuberculosis of the spine is more common in the elderly and immunocompromised. Routine chest X-ray examination, acid fast staining smear of sputum and tubercle bacillus culture can find coexisting tuberculosis in the city.
