Abstract

Background: Glyphosate has gradually replaced paraquat as one of the most commonly used herbicides, but its safety has also been questioned.

Case presentation: Several cases of severe upper airway and digestive tract stenosis were found in patients with glyphosate herbicide poisoning. One case underwent partial gastrectomy and reconstruction of the gastric outflow tract, and one case underwent gastrostomy. Some typical cases were reported.

Conclusions: We found that the damage of digestive tract was due to the strong acid added by some glyphosate herbicides (PH=2). The digestive tract injury in patients taking this herbicide is often very serious, and the prognosis is poor. The effective treatment measures include fasting, gastrointestinal decompression, inhibition of gastric acid secretion, protection of gastric mucosa, maintenance of electrolyte balance, parenteral nutrition, haemostasis and transfusion for gastrointestinal bleeding. Partial gastrectomy and gastric outflow tract reconstruction can be performed after the patients reach the surgical indications.
