Background: This study aims to examine the effect of Pistachio khinjuk extract on glutathione peroxidase activity and reduced Glutathione (GSH) content of serum, aqueous humour and vitreous humour of rabbit.

Materials and methods: This study was carried out on four groups of healthy rabbits. Animals treated with one drop of topical 1.5 % Pistachio khinjuk for four times /day for 2 weeks. Blood sample, aqueous and vitreous samples from the right eye were collected for the clinical inflammatory symptoms and estimation of total antioxidant status.

Results: Glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione were significantly higher in serum compared to aqueous and vitreous fluids in treated groups compared to positive control. Glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione contents in vitreous fluids were higher than aqueous fluids in all studied groups except in negative control. Oral administration of P. khinjuk (Pk) caused an increase in level of GSH and GPX which was revealed by GPX and GSH contents.

Conclusion: consumption of Pistacia khinjuk extract cause significantly increased serum and cornea tissue antioxidant defense systems on rabbits following Alkali injuries.
