Considering the importance of congenital heart diseases (CHD) from public health standpoint and related predisposing risk
factors such as genetic and environmental factors, this study aimed to investigate the frequency of different forms of CHD and to
study possible predisposing risk factors in patients admitted to a university hospital in, Kermanshah, Iran. In this retrospective study,
medical charts of 774 patients with diagnosis of CHD admitted to our university hospital from April 2002 to March 2012 were
reviewed. The required data were collected and analyzed. About 51.9% of the patients were male and 63.8% of patients had consanguineous
parents. In 37.4% of the cases, the mother reported taking at least a medication during the pregnancy. The most common
CHDs were in order atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), tetralogy of Fallot, patent ductu srterios us (PDA),
aortic valve stenos is, and coarctation of the aorta. This study shows more attention to the congenital heart diseases, the predisposing
genetic role of these diseases and also family marriages is better not to be done. It is recommended that further studies will be undertaken
with larger samples.
